A fresh bouquet has a way of transforming a space. Whether it’s a gift or something you’ve chosen for yourself, you want to enjoy those blooms for as long as possible. With a little care, you can make your flowers last well beyond their first few days.

Start with a clean vase

It sounds simple, but it’s one of the most important steps. Any bacteria in the vase will shorten the life of your flowers, so start with something clean, rinsed, and free of any residue.

Trim the stems

Before you place your flowers in water, trim the stems on an angle. This gives them a larger surface area to drink from and prevents the ends from sitting flat on the bottom of the vase.

DIY some flower food

Add a teaspoon of sugar, a few drops of bleach, and a squeeze of lemon juice to your vase water. The sugar feeds the blooms, the bleach keeps bacteria at bay, and the citrus helps maintain water clarity.

Choose the right spot

Keep your bouquet out of direct sunlight, away from heaters, and far from ripening fruit. Ethylene gas from fruit can cause flowers to age more quickly.

Refresh the water

Every two days, change the vase water and give the stems a quick trim. This small step can add several more days to your bouquet’s life.

Remove fading flowers

As some blooms start to wilt, remove them from the arrangement. This keeps the bouquet looking fresh and helps the remaining flowers last longer.

With a little care and attention, your flowers can stay fresh and beautiful for longer—so you can keep enjoying their colour, texture, and scent for days to come.
